Snake Drive III

The third Snake Drive was very possibly the best yet. Indeed many people have argued that it was the best gig they've ever been to. Two great bands and one absolutely fantastic one, plus the normal assortment of DJs and Attik-types hanging around.

The Undergrade kicked off proceedings with aplomb. Fighting off a case of the common cold with plucky Leicester resolve they put on a fantastic organ fueled show that combined ska, psychedelic rock, pop and fairgrounds into an ultra catchy Snake Driving experience.

Next up came Gaffer Hexam. Described by one punter as "who are this lot - they're bloody fantastic" they quickly got their heads down and delivered 35 minutes of pure rock and roll.

Evoking The Clash, Dr Feelgood, The Pirates and a host of other classic Brit-rnb-punktastic stuff they blew everyone away with one hook laden song after another. Not the same old blues crap indeed!

Yet, still the evening climbed to its lofty pinnacle. No one was prepared for the maelstrom of blues that was about to be unleashed by the mighty Seasick Steve and his Level Devils. To say that he was exciting is only the half of it.

It was almost like an epiphany for those of us who have been banging on about the nu blues, the real blues, the punk blues and all of the other kinds of blues that we know and love. Forget yer Clapton's, yer White Stripes even forget yer Buddy Guy's this was the real deal. As if John Lee Hooker had risen up at the height of his powers and delivered his sermon once more into the cold Leicester night.

Thank you Steve!
