Snake Drive

murdering the blues

Snake Drive IX: Friday 17th June 2005

Pig Iron Joe, Post-Teen Neurotic Breakdown Complex, Dead Cowboy Culture + Headphoned and the Chucklevision Sound System.

Why is it Snake Drive always seems to open in panic and close in pandemonium? Well this months episode was a particular "oops where's me trousers farce" if ever there was one. With five days to go two of the bands pulled out due to nervous exhaustion and the Snake Drive team had to run around putting together a bill at the last minute. So what did we come up with.

Well the ever reliable Headphoned kicked off the night with the latest sounds firing from their turntables. Meanwhile upstairs Snake Drive virgins Dead Cowboy Culture got going with their acoustic dreamscape. Bob Dylan was the obvious reference point but the leftfield stabs from the reverby guitar lifted it all to a new place. They came not to praise Dire Straits but to bury them and to rescue the world of blues-based acoustic songwriting.

Next up were a stark contrast in the fantastic Post-Teen Neurotic Breakdown Complex. Guitar, bass and drum machine, heavy as you like and ideas spilling out of every opening. We will always remember their high octane version of Ring of Fire with tears in our eyes.

Finally Pig Iron Joe arrived on stage. Five foot six and hundred tons the undisputed kings of the nu blues. Brand new boiler suit just stolen from Walkers Crisps, brand new mics, same hoary old blues rockin sound. The Pigs rocked and rolled like a hurrican and brought the live section of the entertainment to a shuddering close.

Meanwhile downstairs the Chucklevision Sound System had taken the wheels of plastic in their hands and started to pick through their record collection for blues, garage rock, obscure mod and punk tracks and the odd bit of ska. Oh and the Pogues as well. I'm sure they played about ten Pogues songs, but I can't be sure, it could have been because I was banging myself on the head with a tray. Ack, ack, ack!!!!

What enormous fun!
