The Suicidal Birds, The Surgens, Rioja and Los Muertos VJs
Something a little bit different this time. Downstairs there was no Chucklevision, no Headphoned, no Stone Cat, no Backbeats on the decks. Instead up came a new challenger to the fray. Los Muertos with their incredible video wonderland. Screens were erected boxes of records lifted and projectors hoisted to create a vista worthy of Knebworth in 1978. Alt country to psychedelic swirls - fantastic!
Upstairs the whole thing kicked off with the magnificent Rioja. When they actually hit the stage they came across like an art punk whirlwind that would have taken Franz Ferdinand's breath away. That bass sound man! It just gets inside you.
Next up were the ever excellent Surgens. This time resplendent in cowboy suits and ready to rock. A Gene Vincent cover, a couple of folk classics and some absolutely top notch homegrown songwriting on display. Take us to the hanging ground oh boys, won't you take us to the hanging ground.
The night then climbed to a peak with The Suicidal Birds. This Sabbath-esque Dutch combo amazed all comers with their excitement, their energy and their punctuality. Drawing a line from blues and country to Dinosaur Jr they blew through Snake Drive like a breath of fresh air. And so many pedals, such an enormous stack of speakers - are these guys cool or what!
Meanwhile downstairs the Los Muertos got a few people up on the dance floor. Jump monkeys, jump, you have nothing to loose but your few remaining brain cells. Now laugh your head off! That's it, that's what Snake Drive is all about.
Another great night no less! |
