Snake Drive

murdering the blues

Snake Drive XV: Tuesday 18th October 2005

DM Bob and Country Jem, Jawbone and Five Deadmen + Stone Cat Blues and Chucklevision

We don't dabble with mid-week events very often. However this one was simply too good to miss. Classic folk punkers re-thinking themselves as nu blues artists, the most exciting thing out of Detroit at the moment and a top-notch local punk band - got to be a winner - surely.

And a winner it was!

5 Dead Men. Grrrr, grrrr, rrrr, rrrrr, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck. Amazing! I never knew the word was so versatile. They hit like a whirlwind and then sank back into the night.

Next up was amazing one-man band Jawbone. He looked a bit lonely on the stage to start with - but bloody hell he makes a lot of noise for just one guy. Drums, guitar, harp and voice all going. Undoubtedly authentic, roots right back up to the delta - but at the same time really modern and thrillingly raw. We can very much see why John Peel was a fan!

Finally up came the mighty DM Bob and Country Jem. C-U-N-T-R-E-Y who put the cunt in country? George W is disgrace to Texas! I'm a rocket scientist. You can't really go wrong with songs like this. Again just two of them - but about 78 instruments on stage. And a big noise coming out.Bloody great!

A mid-week extravaganza indeed!
