Snake Drive XIII: Saturday 24th March 2007

Crazy World of Arthur Brown, The Dirty Backbeats and The Forty Fours

We haven't had a Snake Drive for a little while so brows were furrowed wondering whether this one would all come off. But, Daisy did indeed pull it off and for one night only psychedelic blues stood over the world like a colossus.

It was a capacity crowd at The Musician and when I say capacity crowd I'm normally lying, but in this case, I'm not. So bloody loads of people. The normal mix of grey bearded acid casualties who saw Arthur first time round and hot as fuck, super trendy mods and modettes.

First up were The Forty Fours with a messy and wonderful blues jamming set. Finishing off with a psychedelicblues take on "I can't stand it any more, more, can't stand it any more". Bloody great stuff. James give us your version of Venus in Furs next time and all the years of abuse will be forgiven.

Next were The Dirty Backbeats. Just pure fantastic. Why aren't they on a major yet. No, shut up, no excuses from you lot. Just fucking sign them up and be done with it. I want to see them on the hits.

Finally the man himself Arthur Brown came on wearing an executioners (or was it an executionees) hat and worked through a gamut of weirdness. His music was exciting and engaging but his moves were spellbinding. How can one old man be so supple.

Finally a supergroup emerged made up of Arthur Brown, members of the Forty Fours and Dirty Backbeats and one or two others and rocked us like it was 1971. Complete with Frieda's exotic dancing the whole thing blew all of minds man. It was like the doors of perception were totally expanded. I mean it was like dropping acid and watching the grass grow.

Oh yeah!

Man!

Groovey!
